The First-Ever Concept Car: 1938 Buick Y Job Makes an Appearance in Jay Leno’s Garage

Jay Leno’s Garage, hosted by Jay Leno, routinely reviews and features classic cars and motorcycles. This past February, fans of GM and the brand’s glorious past got a treat: a historic GM vehicle—the 1938 Buick Y Job—made an appearance on the show, rolling up and looking classic and sleek alongside General Motors’ president of Global Design, Michael Simcoe.

The 1938 Buick Y Job was the first-ever concept car. Concept cars differ from production vehicles, as they are never intended for production for public use. Rather, they typically debut innovative, state-of-the-art technology and design, providing a sneak peek into what’s to come from the automaker. There are only seven Buick Y Job models, and that’s why it’s so remarkable that one was featured on Jay Leno’s Garage.  As Leno said on the show, “[This is] probably the most famous car in the history of General Motors.” No one quite knows how the concept car got its name, but some speculate that it has to do with “Y” meaning prototype within the aerospace industry, or that it indicates a step beyond traditional “Project X” products.

The Buick Y Job makes quite an impression, featuring a low and long body that looks properly sophisticated. It featured innovative technology for its time, including power windows, a power-retractable roof, and an automatic transmission in place of the clutch pedal.

Buick Named Winner of J.D. Power Total Ownership Experience Award

When it comes to customer satisfaction, we here at Richard Karr Buick GMC can attest that few brands do it better than Buick – and J.D. Power seems to agree. The automotive experts at J.D. Power recently named Buick the first-ever mass-market auto manufacturer brand to receive its new Total Ownership Experience award.

To earn this award, automotive brands must offer customers an excellent experience through all stages of the vehicle buying and ownership process. The winners of the award are decided after being reviewed in five categories: sales, appearance, service, long-term reliability, and initial quality.

According to Doug Betts, senior vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power, “We continue to examine every aspect of customers’ opinions on vehicle sales, quality, and dependability, as well as dealership customer service. Addressing these areas effectively creates repeat buyers and brand advocates, so it’s important for manufacturers and dealers to listen, learn, and continue to evolve with the times.”

The Total Ownership Experience award only goes to brands that do well in five other studies from J.D. Power: Execution and Layout (APEAL), Automotive Performance, Customer Service Index (CSI), Initial Quality Study (IQS), Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI), and Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS).

Buick managed to come out on top in last year’s J.D. Power Sales Satisfaction Index and Customer Service Index as well.

Fuel Efficiency Tips for Getting More Out of Your Tank

Is your gas budget a little bigger than you’d like? Here are some fuel efficiency tips for improving the fuel economy of your vehicle.

Accelerate Less

The more you accelerate, the more your vehicle burns through fuel. It doesn’t matter what speed you’re at—maintaining steady speeds uses less gas than stop-and-go traffic. Try using more highways and accelerating slower.

Brake Less

This goes hand-in-hand with the previous tip. The more you brake, the more you have to accelerate. Try coasting up to stoplights instead of racing to the white line. This gives the traffic light a chance to turn green before you get there.

Check Tire Pressure

Did you know improperly inflated tires are a major reason for lower-than-optimal gas mileage? Make sure your wheels are up to snuff by regularly checking tire pressure.

Service Your Car Regularly

Cars consist of many little mechanical parts, and if any one of them is malfunctioning, it can reduce your fuel economy. Your oil, oil filter, and air filter can play major roles in this, so make sure you keep up to date with routine maintenance.

We at Richard Karr Buick GMC just want everyone to get the best fuel economy that they can; follow these fuel efficiency tips to get the most out of your car.

What is General Motors’ eAssist Technology?

General Motors’ eAssist Technology

For General Motors, offering the best fuel efficiency possible is important, which is why the American carmaker now offers General Motors’ eAssist technology in a variety of GM vehicles. Through a combination of different functions, the eAssist technology reduces fuel consumption, increasing the length of time between visits to the gas pump and decreasing the strain gas puts on your wallet.

The eAssist technology uses both Stop-Start engine capability and a 115-volt lithium-ion battery, which powers a 15-kW electric motor-generator. This allows the engine to stop running in certain conditions, saving a significant amount of fuel. Though the engine stops, the vehicle’s steering, radio, and interior functions all continue to run. As the brake pedal is released, the engine restarts itself, allowing it to accelerate at a normal rate. The eAssist system even uses the electric motor-generator to help the vehicle accelerate under hard acceleration or at cruising speed.

Other enhancements of the system include underbody aerodynamics, which streamline the car, along with wheels and tires that are optimized for performance and fuel efficiency. For more information on General Motors’ eAssist technology, contact Richard Karr Motors today!
